While Chevy Chase Bank is committed to providing a safe, secure Online Banking experience, there are things that you can do to protect yourself wherever you are online.
- Make certain that you are using the most current release of your computer software, including your browser, anti-virus software, and operating system. The companies who developed the software you’re using will have information available on their Web sites to keep you up to date.
- Take advantage of any security measures offered by your ISP. Many Internet service providers offer software to scan for and remove spyware and viruses from your computer.
- Do not share your user name(s), passwords or PIN with anyone. Don’t write them down, and don’t store them in a file on your computer. A mix of letters and numbers is best, and avoid using something identifiable, such as a birth date or a pet’s name.
- If you’re providing personal or financial information while online, look for the closed padlock icon that is usually on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. This usually indicates that a site is secure and that your information will be encrypted.
- Always sign off after visiting secure websites. If you aren’t using your computer, shut it down or disconnect your Internet connection. This is especially important with "always-on" connections, such as cable modems.
- Be aware that there are risks involved in using public computers - such as those in hotels, libraries, or Internet cafes - to connect to any site that requires personal information. Spyware or other malicious code may be installed on public equipment, and regardless of other safety measures you may take, you could still be at risk.
- Carefully review your monthly statements. If anything looks suspicious, investigate it immediately.
- If asked to log in or provide information based on an email request, don’t follow the link in the email. Open a new browser window, type in the company’s web address, and determine if action is required.
