If it looks like a duck...

Face it. A check card looks just like a credit card. It offers a lot of the same features of a credit card, but it’s different in a few important ways. Primarily, check card purchases are automatically deducted from your checking account – it is not an extension of credit that you pay back later like a credit card. Similar to a credit card, it’s nearly universally accepted – and is as good as cash. It’s a good way to keep track of your expenses for budgeting purposes. You also can use a check card at ATMs to withdraw cash.

Because a check card is multi-talented, it can be used like a credit card, which means you either can sign for purchases or enter a PIN when you use it. When used with a signature, your check card gives you valuable zero-liability protection. So if the card is ever used fraudulently, you will not be held responsible for the charges.

The amount of your check card purchase is immediately deducted from your checking account. In some instances, as when purchasing gas, only one dollar posts to your account initially. However, the total purchase amount will be deducted from your checking account within 2-3 business days.

The Chevy Chase Check Card also is a good way to stay financially responsible. While you may be tempted to buy things you can’t afford with a credit card, the lure isn’t so great when you can only spend what’s in your checking account. A Check Card transaction is much more like paying with cash.
